IN THE NEWS - SURF GIRL WINS VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 2008

Conrad Jupiters Summer Surf Girl, Sarah Boersen, has been recognised as a 2008 Volunteer of the Year for her philanthropic support of the North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club and will receive a prize donation of $A10,000 for North Burleigh SLSC.

Recognised by her employer, Macquarie Group and its philanthropic arm, the Macquarie Group Foundation, the annual Macquarie Staff Community Awards program acknowledges the outstanding community contributions of its staff, as well as the organisations they serve.

Sarah has been awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award, which is given to a dedicated volunteer who devotes significant time and efforts to a not-for-profit organisation.

Sarah is North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club's fundraiser
and spokesperson as the Club's nominated Conrad Jupiters Summer Surf Girl, a fundraising initiative of Surf Life Saving Queensland. She organises a number of fundraising events throughout the lifesaving season. She also assists with the training of new crewman of the Inflatable Rescue Boats and organises the water safety at Brisbane's annual Open Water Ocean Swim. In addition, Sarah is an active volunteer for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and supports Macquarie Group Foundation initiatives such as Big Buddy - a one-on-one reading guidance and mentorship program for primary school children.

Kylie Parmley from the North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club is very grateful for Sarah's time and commends her dedication.

"Sarah is a highly committed and devoted member of the Club and has truly made an impact on those she works with. Through Sarah's fundraising and volunteering efforts, she has significantly helped raise the community profile of the North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club. The funds that Sarah has raised will assist the Club in purchasing and maintaining vital life saving equipment," said Kylie Parmley.

Julie White, Head of the Macquarie Group Foundation, said the Foundation places great importance on supporting the community efforts of its staff.

"The contribution of Macquarie Group staff - as volunteers, fundraisers, board members of not-for-profit organisations and pro bono service providers - continues to grow from strength to strength, significantly enhancing Macquarie's overall community effort.

"We are very proud of this year's record number nominees for the Macquarie Staff Community Awards and I would like to congratulate Sarah on her efforts and the contribution she has made to the North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club.
