The Early History of North Burleigh SLSC

As November slips away, we look back at what was a HUGE month not only in the Annual Calendar but also in the Club's history.

The 60th Anniversary Celebrations held on the 13th, 14th & 15th November was an obvious highlight for all that attended but also was a great chance to reflect on the stories that make up our great Club.

With thanks to Bill Chivers,, the early history of the Club has been collated and updated. Over months (and years), Bill has been in contact with many of the 'Old Boys" and thanks to their anecdotes and memories, we are able to present to all our members the History of North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club.

Stay tuned to more updates to the history page of North Burleigh SLSC including stories from past and present members.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Members - Old Boys, past & present members who made this weekend a huge success:

  • Foundation Members - Keith "Frank" Higgs and Brian Garde
  • President - Mal Pahl and the Surf Club Board of Management
  • Club Manager - Matthew Dagg & Functions Manager - Karen Lee and the Supporters' Club staff
  • Surf Club office staff - Michelle Williams, Melanie Landrigan, Leonie Keen & Kylie Parmley
and especially...

  • The 60th Anniversary Committee - Brian "Buster" Barry (the driving force behind the weekend), Faye Rodd, Sally-Anne Sharpe, Greg Lawson, Brian Carroll, Rick Walker, BJ Miley, Peter Hallett
Thanks to all, and we look forward to the next 10 years!!!

North Burleigh celebrates its 60th Anniversary

North Burleigh SLSC celebrates 60 years of saving lives in style today with over 90 guests coming together in the modern day setting of the Supporter's Club Oceanview Function Room.

With the Club privileged to have two foundation members at the day's celebration, both Brian Garde and Keith 'Frank' Higgs were presented with a special plaque to recognise their achievements as the forefathers of the North Burleigh SLSC.

As I type this, Greg Lawson is advising the group of all apologies and has given a very special mention to Chivery Bill - a member who has been instrumental in collating an extremely comprehensive history of the Club for the 50's and 60's. It is fair to say that Bill's efforts are priceless and will live on for decades to come - all people present are now toasting his efforts!!! Thanks Bill, much appreciated!

The Launch of the North Burleigh History Page... proceeding this event, an updated history page will be shown under the History tab in ABOUT! Read all about the early days of the Club and about those men that have made North Burleigh what it is today!

So, as the crowds head to the buffet, I will log out but will update you after the event!

IN THE NEWS - SURF GIRL WINS VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 2008

Conrad Jupiters Summer Surf Girl, Sarah Boersen, has been recognised as a 2008 Volunteer of the Year for her philanthropic support of the North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club and will receive a prize donation of $A10,000 for North Burleigh SLSC.

Recognised by her employer, Macquarie Group and its philanthropic arm, the Macquarie Group Foundation, the annual Macquarie Staff Community Awards program acknowledges the outstanding community contributions of its staff, as well as the organisations they serve.

Sarah has been awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award, which is given to a dedicated volunteer who devotes significant time and efforts to a not-for-profit organisation.

Sarah is North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club's fundraiser
and spokesperson as the Club's nominated Conrad Jupiters Summer Surf Girl, a fundraising initiative of Surf Life Saving Queensland. She organises a number of fundraising events throughout the lifesaving season. She also assists with the training of new crewman of the Inflatable Rescue Boats and organises the water safety at Brisbane's annual Open Water Ocean Swim. In addition, Sarah is an active volunteer for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and supports Macquarie Group Foundation initiatives such as Big Buddy - a one-on-one reading guidance and mentorship program for primary school children.

Kylie Parmley from the North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club is very grateful for Sarah's time and commends her dedication.

"Sarah is a highly committed and devoted member of the Club and has truly made an impact on those she works with. Through Sarah's fundraising and volunteering efforts, she has significantly helped raise the community profile of the North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club. The funds that Sarah has raised will assist the Club in purchasing and maintaining vital life saving equipment," said Kylie Parmley.

Julie White, Head of the Macquarie Group Foundation, said the Foundation places great importance on supporting the community efforts of its staff.

"The contribution of Macquarie Group staff - as volunteers, fundraisers, board members of not-for-profit organisations and pro bono service providers - continues to grow from strength to strength, significantly enhancing Macquarie's overall community effort.

"We are very proud of this year's record number nominees for the Macquarie Staff Community Awards and I would like to congratulate Sarah on her efforts and the contribution she has made to the North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club.
